Essential Tremor: Multiple Surgical Options
presented by Mohamad Khaled, MD, MSurg FAANS, AFACS

At this meeting, we will explore and discuss the multiple surgical options available for treating ET and stimulation versus lesioning. For stimulation, Dr. Khaled will present frame-based versus frameless. For lesioning, he will present radiofrequency ablation versus stereotactic radiosurgery versus MRI-guided Focused Ultrasound.

Mohamad Khaled, MD, MSurg, FAANS, AFACS, a Neurosurgeon and Spine Surgeon and Director of Quality at Hartford Healthcare’s Ayer Neuroscience Institute, is an author on the original New England Journal of Medicine paper from 2013 on Focused Ultrasound (which we’ve previously reviewed at our meetings). His highly specialized surgical skills include experience with frameless Deep Brain Stimulation for tremor.

Dr. Khaled comes to Hartford HealthCare from Baystate Health, where he was Director of Functional Neurosurgery and launched the Deep Brain Stimulation Program, the first of its kind in western Massachusetts. He was also an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center-Baystate.

His areas of clinical interest include Deep Brain Stimulation; epilepsy surgery; cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine surgery, including minimally-invasive spine surgery; cervical spine deformity correction surgery and spine tumors; surgery for pain; and brain tumors. His research has included work on MRI-guided Focused Ultrasound lesioning in Deep Brain Stimulation and comparing radiofrequency, GammaKnife radiosurgery and Focused Ultrasound lesions in the brain.

Dr. Khaled, who is fluent in English and Arabic, earned his medical degree from Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt, and completed a residency at Wayne State University/Detroit Medical Center. He also completed fellowships in epilepsy surgery and pediatric neurosurgery at Cleveland Clinic. He is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.

St. Vincent’s Medical Center is conveniently located on Main Street, in Bridgeport’s residential north side neighborhood, with easy access from the Merritt Parkway (Route 15) and Interstate-95, as well as the Route 8 & 25 Connector.

• From the Merritt Parkway:
  Take Exit 48 (Main Street); proceed 2.3 miles south to St. Vincent’s campus, on the left.
• From I-95:
  Take Exit 27A onto the Route 8 & 25 Connector; take Exit 4 (Lindley St.); turn left onto Lindley and proceed three blocks to Hawley Ave.; turn left onto Hawley and the Medical Center entrance is on the right.
• From the Route 8 & 25 Connector (southbound):
  Take Exit 5 (Boston Ave.); turn left at end of ramp and proceed to Summit St.; follow Summit to Main and turn left; Medical Center will be on the left.
