Focused Ultrasound to Treat Essential Tremor

presented by neurosurgeon and neuroscientist
John David Rolston, MD, PhD

In Dr. Rolston’s words: “Since the 1950s, we’ve used surgery to stop tremors after medications stop working. Recently, a new noninvasive method of surgery was developed that uses soundwaves to stop tremors, avoiding the need for any incisions. This technology, focused ultrasound, is approved by the FDA and backed by multiple clinical trials. This presentation will describe the procedure, the most recent advances in focused ultrasound (like second-side treatments), and compare it to other surgeries for tremor.”

Dr. John Rolston is a neurosurgeon and neuroscientist at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, recognized internationally for his contributions to epilepsy surgery and movement disorder surgery. Before moving to Brigham & Women’s, he served as the Director of Epilepsy Surgery and the Director of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery at the University of Utah from 2017 to 2022.

Dr. Rolston received his Bachelor’s degree from Columbia University, where he won the Russell Mills Award for Excellence in Computer Science. For his PhD, he developed brain-computer interfaces for epilepsy at the Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory University. He received an MD from Emory University before completing his residency training and post-doctoral fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco.

THE NEW NEURAVIVE PROCEDURE
THAT RELIES ON MR-GUIDED FOCUSED ULTRASOUND
presented by Michael Kaplitt, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Kaplitt is a board-certified neurosurgeon and is the Director of Movement Disorders at Weill Cornell Brain and Spine Center. He is consistently named to lists of top physicians in New York, and has received several prestigious awards, including the Young Investigator Award from the American Society for Gene Therapy. He has been featured on the Charlie Rose Show, Good Day New York, Business Insider, and other media for his work in essential tremor and movement disorders.After participating in the focused ultrasound clinical trial, Dr. Kaplitt was the first physician in New York to offer Neuravive after FDA-approval for focused ultrasound was obtained. He currently serves on the editorial board of several prestigious scientific and medical journals, including the Journal of Neurosurgery – widely considered to be the most important in the field.

AT THIS MEETING: Participants will be educated on all treatment options offered for essential tremor with an emphasis on the new Neuravive procedure that relies on MR-Guided Focused Ultrasound. You should expect to gain meaningful insights on Neuravive clinical trial results and hear patient experiences.

NOTE: Neuravive is the brand name given to the focused ultrasound treatment for essential tremor by the equipment manufacturer, Insightec.

DRIVING & PARKING:

St. Vincent’s Medical Center is conveniently located on Main Street, in Bridgeport’s residential north side neighborhood, with easy access from the Merritt Parkway (Route 15) and Interstate-95, as well as the Route 8 & 25 Connector.

  • From the Merritt Parkway:Take Exit 48 (Main Street); proceed 2.3 miles south to St. Vincent’s campus, on the left.
  • From I-95:
    Take Exit 27A onto the Route 8 & 25 Connector; take Exit 4 (Lindley St.); turn left onto Lindley and proceed three blocks to Hawley Ave.; turn left onto Hawley and the Medical Center entrance is on the right.
  • From the Route 8 & 25 Connector (southbound):Take Exit 5 (Boston Ave.); turn left at end of ramp and proceed to Summit St.; follow Summit to Main and turn left; Medical Center will be on the left.

Blue “H” hospital signs also lead to St. Vincent’s 10-story, white landmark building.

PARKING:

The Patient/Visitor Parking Garage is located directly in front of the Medical Center.

  • Please bring your parking ticket in with you so that you can have it validated at the Central Cashier located in the Main Lobby Patient Information Desk when the meeting is over!
