We’re back!!

Personal medical issues caused me to cancel both our December 2024 and our February 2025 CT Essential Tremor Support Group meetings ..but I’m delighted to announce that we’ll resume our meetings in April.

IMPORTANT NOTE: To accommodate our members who celebrate Passover and/or Holy Saturday, we’re making this one-time change to our regular schedule and will meet from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 26th.

(As of June 7th, we’ll return to our standard first Saturday of every other month: February, April, June, August, October, and December.)

Speakers, topics, and location for our April 26th meeting will be announced as soon as they’re confirmed. In the interim, please be sure to save the date on your calendar!

With sincere thanks to everyone who personally reached out to me during this hiatus and the warmest regards,

Helen Moser
CT Essential Tremor Support Group Leader

JOGO

JOGO Health provides digital therapeutics for neuromuscular conditions:
  • Stroke Recovery (Dystonia and Spasticity)
  • Parkinson’s Tremors

At this meeting, we will learn how JOGO uses biofeedback [a type of mind-body technique you use to control some of your body’s functions, such as your heart rate, breathing patterns and muscle responses] to create neuroplasticity [the ability of the brain to form new connections and pathways and change how its circuits are wired].

Sanjai Murali, Founder and CEO of JOGO Health, Inc. worked with pioneers from NYU for over a decade to create a 21st-century version of EMG biofeedback modality – JOGO-Gx – that is enhanced by AI and easy to use for a variety of chronic pain disorders, incontinence, and movement disorders associated with stroke, Parkinson’s, and other neuromuscular disorders.

JOGO Health is backed by Mayo Clinic ventures. Sanjai brings extensive business development experience and general management experience in the technology business. In a prior life, he was part of the team that built the first payment application based on a smart chip.

You won’t want to miss our October 5th meeting!

Is there a role for the microbiome-gut-brain axis in Essential Tremor?

The subject of a gut-brain connection has come up in several of our recent meetings, so we’re excited to announce that it will be addressed at our October 5th meeting. Join us as Integrative Medicine specialist Dr. Eric Secor, ND, PhD, MPH, MS, LAc, Dipl Ac., NCAAOM explores this subject with us!

Be sure to save the date in your calendar and stay tuned for additional info, including our October meeting location.

We’ll see you in October!

For the first time in 10-1/2 years – and only because I’m still recovering from major surgery – we’ll forego our August support group meeting. Be assured that we’ll be back in full swing for our next regularly scheduled meeting on October 5th!

Looking forward to seeing you then,

What’s the Buzz:
a deep dive into high intensity focused ultrasound for tremor
presented by Dr. Toni de Marcaida

This will be a discussion on the who, what, when, where, and how of high intensity focused ultrasound for Essential Tremor, the non-surgical treatment option for medication refractory tremor.

Dr. Toni de Marcaida is the Medical Director of Hartford HealthCare’s Chase Family Movement Disorders Center, Movement Disorders Fellowship Program Director and Associate Clinical Professor in Neurology at the UConn School of Medicine. Under her leadership, Hartford HealthCare’s movement disorders program was designated as a Comprehensive Care Center by the Parkinson’s Foundation’s Global Care Network, one of the first in the nation and the only one in the Northeast to date.

She completed her fellowship in Experimental Therapeutics and Movement Disorders at the University of Rochester, her Neurology residency at the University of Connecticut, where she was selected as chief resident during both her 3rd and 4th years of training, and her medical internship at New York Medical College. She was named one of Hartford’s Top 30 Women of Distinction in 2019 for her service to patients with Parkinson disease and other Movement Disorders, and her role in developing the Movement Disorders program for Hartford HealthCare. Most recently, she was recognized by the Schwartz Center as one of 12 finalists from almost 200 nominees for the 2023 National Compassionate Caregiver of the Year Award.

Dr. de Marcaida has a special interest in evaluating novel pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions, including the judicious use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine, in the management of PD and other movement disorders. She has been the Principal Investigator for over fifty clinical trials for PD and other movement disorders, but advocates strongly for a shift away from a single-minded focus on the treatment of disease to a broader perspective on the importance of overall wellness and well-being, as a better approach to care. She is also passionate about addressing racial disparities and health inequities related to the care of patients with Movement Disorders.
