DEEP BRAIN STIMULATION

Michael Hahn is the Connecticut Therapy Specialist for Deep Brain Stimulation, an FDA approved indication for Essential Tremor.  He has been working with the Neurology and Neurosurgical departments at Yale New Haven Hospital for 15 years, the last four specializing in DBS therapy. A graduate of the University of Richmond, with post graduate education at Fairfield University, Michael has assisted in the treatment of over 100 Essential Tremor patients with DBS.

St. Vincent’s Medical Center is conveniently located on Main Street, in Bridgeport’s residential north side neighborhood, with easy access from the Merritt Parkway (Route 15) and Interstate-95, as well as the Route 8 & 25 Connector.

  • From the Merritt Parkway:Take Exit 48 (Main Street); proceed 2.3 miles south to St. Vincent’s campus, on the left.
  • From I-95:
    Take Exit 27A onto the Route 8 & 25 Connector; take Exit 4 (Lindley St.); turn left onto Lindley and proceed three blocks to Hawley Ave.; turn left onto Hawley and the Medical Center entrance is on the right.
  • From the Route 8 & 25 Connector (southbound):Take Exit 5 (Boston Ave.); turn left at end of ramp and proceed to Summit St.; follow Summit to Main and turn left; Medical Center will be on the left.

Blue “H” hospital signs also lead to St. Vincent’s 10-story, white landmark building.

PARKING:

The Patient/Visitor Parking Garage is located directly in front of the Medical Center.

  • Please bring your parking ticket in with you so that you can have it validated at the Central Cashier located in the Main Lobby Patient Information Desk when the meeting is over!

LAUGHTER THERAPY
presented by Pamela Atwood, Certified Laughter Leader

The emotional benefits of laughter are well-documented, and the physiological benefits are numerous. Laughter Therapy is a workshop for wellness utilizing simulated laughter exercises to stimulate true, mirthful laughter. A discussion of how members can integrate more laughter into their lives through the Good Hearted Living Program ™ rounds out this interactive and fun seminar. The workshop includes discussion of the science and history of laughter, opportunities to practice stress-relief techniques, and how to apply these principles to your overall wellness plan.

Guest Speaker: Dr. Joan Monin

Our guest speaker will be Dr. Joan Monin, who received her PhD in psychology at Carnegie Mellon University.  Dr. Monin is a tenure-track Assistant Professor at Yale School of Public Health in the Social and Behavioral Sciences Division of Chronic Disease Epidemiology.  Her research focuses on the impact caring for a loved one has on “caregivers” and ways that “caregivers” and “care recipients” can interact with one another to improve psychological and physical health.

From Route 84 – Eastbound from New York or Danbury area
Exit 18 (Chase Parkway). Turn right and go to the first traffic light. Then turn right and go to the next light. Turn right (this is West Main Street). Take the second left onto Robbins Street for 1/2 mile. Hospital is on the left.

From Route 84 – Westbound from Hartford area
Exit 18 (Highland Avenue/West Main Street). Take fork to West Main Street. Turn right (this is West Main Street). Take the first left onto Robbins Street for 1/2 mile. Hospital is on the left.

From Route 8 – Northbound from Naugatuck or Bridgeport area
Exit 32 (Downtown Waterbury). Continue straight through second light (West Main Street) moving into the far left lane, bear left under underpass to stop sign (Watertown Ave). Go straight up hill (Robbins Street). Hospital entrance is next right.

Route 8 – Southbound from Watertown, Thomaston or Torrington
Exit 34 (West Main Street/Downtown Waterbury exit). Take a right at the end of the exit onto West Main Street. Take the first right onto Colley Street (this is a one-way street). Hospital is straight ahead, on Robbins Street.

Exciting Readi Steadi Glove under development!

An exciting new assistive device is under development. Readi Steadi is a custom weighted orthotic glove invented by Dr. Krista Madere, a certified hand therapist. Krista has been an occupational therapist for more than 18 years and has a strong background in neurology and orthopedics.

The Readi Steadi glove is not yet available to the general public. Krista is still perfecting the design… but you can click here to see a preview. Once perfected, her goal is to get it out to OT’s around the country.

  • Take I-91 north to exit 13.

From Points West (Litchfield/Torrington, CT)

  • Route 8 South to I-84 East.
  • Continue to Exit 26. Bear right onto Route 70.
  • Continue on Route 70 to Route 10. Bear right onto Route 10 South.
  • Proceed approximately 2 blocks and turn left onto Wallingford Road, which becomes Gaylord Farm Road at the town line.
  • Gaylord Hospital is on the right, about 3 miles from the Route 10 intersection.

From Hartford, CT via I-84

  • I-84 west to exit 27 (I-691/Meriden).
  • Take exit 3 (Route 10, Cheshire).
  • Turn right at light onto route 10 south.
  • Just past Town Hall, turn left on Wallingford Rd.
  • Wallingford Road becomes Gaylord Farms Road at the town line; Gaylord Hospital is on the right.

From Waterbury/Cheshire

  • I-84 east to exit 26. Take route 70 to route 10 south/Cheshire.
  • Just past Town Hall, turn left on Wallingford Rd.
  • Wallingford Road becomes Gaylord Farms Road at the town line; Gaylord Hospital is on the right.
