The Diagnosis of Essential Treatment and
Appropriate Treatment Options Once the Diagnosis is Made
presented by Dr. Elena Bortan
At this meeting, Dr. Bortan will discuss clinician challenging in the diagnosis of essential tremor (ET): definite, probable and possible ET and appropriate treatment options once the diagnosis is made. In the category of treatment, Dr. Bortan will address how treatment options depend on diagnosis, side effect of medication, underlying patient medical history, failure of symptomatic improvement to medication and decision for invasive therapy.
Dr. Elena Bortan is a Board-Certified Neurologist with sub-specialty training in Movement Disorders. She is a graduate of New England Medical Center and completed a Movement Disorder fellowship at Lahey Clinic. Currently working at Middlesex Hospital, Dr. Bortan’s area of clinical interest includes the treatment of movement disorders such as Essential Tremor, Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, etc.

Take I-91 South to Exit 22S, Route 9 South. Follow Route 9 through Middletown. Take Exit 13, Route 17. Continue straight to the intersection with Route 17, South Main Street. At the light, turn right onto South Main Street. Follow South Main Street to the intersection with Crescent Street. Turn right onto Crescent Street. FROM SOUTH (MERIDEN)
Take I-91 or Wilbur Cross Parkway to Route 691 East. Follow Route 691 (becomes Route 66) to Main Street, Middletown. Turn right onto Main Street. Continue down Main Street to the intersection with Pleasant Street. Turn right onto Pleasant Street, then bear left at the next light onto South Main Street. Turn left onto Crescent Street. The Role of Integrative Medicine in the Treatment of Essential Tremor
presented by Adam Simmons, MD, DABIHM
Dr. Adam Simmons is a board-certified neurologist with subspecialty training in Movement Disorders. He is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine. Dr. Simmons is the Director of the Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders Center at The Hospital for Special Care in New Britain, CT. He practices in a multidisciplinary setting and integrates care from physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech and swallow therapists in his clinics. Dr. Simmons also practices acupuncture in the neurology clinics where he utilizes Kiiko Matsumoto’s Japanese style of acupuncture to treat a wide variety of neurologic and non-nerologic conditions.

Focused Ultrasound Thalamotomy — Now that it’s here!

This summer, the FDA approved focused ultrasound to treat essential tremor in patients who haven’t responded to medication. We’ll get updated information and discuss this newly approved option at our October meeting.
Dr. J. Antonelle de Marcaida is the Medical Director of the Movement Disorders Center of the Hartford Healthcare Neuroscience Institute. She has had chapter and journal publications throughout her career in relation to the work she has done in Experimental Therapeutics and has been serving the Movement Disorders community in Connecticut for over 15 years.

Lisa Taylor-Austin is a Licensed Professional Counselor, National Certified Counselor, Licensed Mental Health Counselor, and a National Certified Forensic Mental Health Evaluator. Lisa holds a Master of Science in Counseling from SUNY Brockport (CACREP accredited) and a Bachelor of Science in Developmental and Behavioral Disabilities. Additionally, she completed post-masters coursework in counseling, education, gangs and substance abuse at SUNY Brockport, California State University at Los Angeles, Loyola Marymount University, and the University of New England. Lisa has been an instructor at Yale University, Loyola Marymount University and the University of Southern California.

Occupational Therapy Interventions in the Treatment of Essential Tremor

Currently the Inpatient Therapy Supervisor at Gaylord Hospital, Anne Walczak has extensive experience working with many diagnoses as an Occupational Therapist. A graduate of Quinnipiac College, Anne has also worked in the outpatient arena and taught at both Quinnipiac University and Goodwin College. At this meeting, she will discuss the role of occupational therapy in the treatment of ET, make recommendations for adaptive equipment, demonstrate use of the equipment available, and provide resources for their purchase.

- I-84 west to exit 27 (I-691/Meriden).
- Take exit 3 (Route 10, Cheshire).
- Turn right at light onto route 10 south.
