The Role of Integrative Medicine in the Treatment of Essential Tremor
presented by Adam Simmons, MD, DABIHM

Dr. Adam Simmons is a board-certified neurologist with subspecialty training in Movement Disorders. He is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine. Dr. Simmons is the Director of the Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders Center at The Hospital for Special Care in New Britain, CT. He practices in a multidisciplinary setting and integrates care from physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech and swallow therapists in his clinics. Dr. Simmons also practices acupuncture in the neurology clinics where he utilizes Kiiko Matsumoto’s Japanese style of acupuncture to treat a wide variety of neurologic and non-nerologic conditions.

From Points North (Springfield, Mass./Vermont): Take Interstate 91 South to Interstate 84 West. Refer to directions below from the Hartford area.

From Boston and Points East: Take the Mass Turnpike, Interstate 90, West to Exit 9, I-84. Take I-84 West to Exit 37, Fienemann Road. Refer to directions below, from the Hartford area.

From the Hartford Area: Take Interstate 84 West to Exit 37, Fienemann Road. Bear right off exit ramp. At the third traffic light turn right onto Corbin Avenue. Go past Hospital for Special Care though the next light and take an immediate left into the parking lot.

From Points West, and the Waterbury/Danbury Areas: Take Interstate 84 East to Exit 36, Slater Road (left exit). Go straight at light onto Sterling Street. At the second stop sign turn left onto Corbin Avenue. Driveway for the Research & Education Center is approx.  ¼ mile on the right, (off Corbin Avenue).

From the Middletown Area: Take Route 9 North to Exit 22, Route 9 North. Follow Route 9 North to Exit 28, Route 72 West. Take Route 72 West to Exit 7, Corbin Avenue Turn Right at the light. Continue on Corbin Avenue through four lights. The Research & Education Center is just before the 5th light on the right.

From the New Haven Area and the Connecticut Shoreline: Take Interstate 91 North to Exit 22, Route 9 North.  Follow Route 9 North to Exit 28, Route 72 West.  Take Route 72 West to Exit 7, Corbin Avenue.  Turn Right at the light. Continue on Corbin Avenue through four lights.  The Research & Education Center is just before the 5th light on the right.

Focused Ultrasound Thalamotomy — Now that it’s here!

This summer, the FDA approved focused ultrasound to treat essential tremor in patients who haven’t responded to medication. We’ll get updated information and discuss this newly approved option at our October meeting.

Dr. J. Antonelle de Marcaida is the Medical Director of the Movement Disorders Center of the Hartford Healthcare Neuroscience Institute. She has had chapter and journal publications throughout her career in relation to the work she has done in Experimental Therapeutics and has been serving the Movement Disorders community in Connecticut for over 15 years.

FDA Approves Focused Ultrasound!

Exciting news! Much sooner than any of us anticipated, the International Essential Tremor Foundation announced Monday, July 11th, that the FDA has approved the first focused ultrasound device to treat essential tremor in patients who have not responded to medication! Lisa Taylor-Austin is a Licensed Professional Counselor, National Certified Counselor, Licensed Mental Health Counselor, and a National Certified Forensic Mental Health Evaluator. Lisa holds a Master of Science in Counseling from SUNY Brockport (CACREP accredited) and a Bachelor of Science in Developmental and Behavioral Disabilities. Additionally, she completed post-masters coursework in counseling, education, gangs and substance abuse at SUNY Brockport, California State University at Los Angeles, Loyola Marymount University, and the University of New England. Lisa has been an instructor at Yale University, Loyola Marymount University and the University of Southern California.

Occupational Therapy Interventions in the Treatment of Essential Tremor
presented by Anne Walczak, OTR/L

Currently the Inpatient Therapy Supervisor at Gaylord Hospital, Anne Walczak has extensive experience working with many diagnoses as an Occupational Therapist. A graduate of Quinnipiac College, Anne has also worked in the outpatient arena and taught at both Quinnipiac University and Goodwin College. At this meeting, she will discuss the role of occupational therapy in the treatment of ET, make recommendations for adaptive equipment, demonstrate use of the equipment available, and provide resources for their purchase.

  • Take exit 3 (Route 10, Cheshire).
  • Turn right at light onto route 10 south.
  • Just past Town Hall, turn left on Wallingford Rd.

From Waterbury/Cheshire

  • I-84 east to exit 26. Take route 70 to route 10 south/Cheshire.
