Psychological and Neuropsychological Functioning In Essential Tremor
presented by Emily Sharp, PhD, ABPP

Although tremor is the cardinal symptom of Essential Tremor, recent research has also identified important non-motor symptoms associated with ET. This talk will focus on the psychological and cognitive symptoms associated with Essential Tremor.

Dr. Emily Sharp is a board certified clinical neuropsychologist and Assistant Professor in the Yale School of Medicine Department of Neurology. She is on the faculty within the Movement Disorders section in the Department of Neurology at Yale New Haven Hospital and part of the DBS surgery evaluation team. Dr. Sharp obtained her PhD in clinical psychology from the University of Southern California and completed a two year post-doctoral fellowship in neuropsychology at VA Boston Healthcare System.

Vocal Tremor: What Is the Role of Behavioral Treatment?
presented by Alice Kosowsky, MA MS CCC-SLP

Alice Kosowsky, MA MS CCC-SLP, is a Speech Pathologist at Gaylord Hospital working with outpatients. Alice entered Speech Pathology after earning a master’s degree in psycholinguistics, giving her an appreciation for the interaction between language and speech production. She taught graduate students 1:1 for 14 years at Southern CT State University, and conducted a class for undergraduates in the area of phonetics. She has also worked with people challenged by swallow disorders for many years, continuing this area of specialty at Gaylord Hospital.

Within the past 5 years, Alice chose to independently develop a clinical interest in voice. She is pleased to be able to survey the literature on the treatment of Essential Voice Tremor and share what she has learned with us. At this meeting, Alice will speak about what is considered the gold standard in treatment, newly developing options, reconsidered options, and will update us about behavioral/speech therapy.

Rehabilitation Strategies for Cerebellar Dysfunction
[common treatment strategies for ET from both Physical and Occupational Therapy]
presented by Megan Rood, MSPT

At this meeting, we’ll discuss common treatment strategies from both Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy for managing the symptoms of Essential Tremor. Megan will address preventing falls, improving balance, and strategies to improve activities of daily living.

Megan Rood, MSPT received her Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy from Northeastern University. She is currently the Program Director for Neurological Services for Hartford HealthCare Rehabilitation Network, where she treats a large population of people with neurological deficits. Megan has completed advanced coursework to become a Certified Stroke Rehabilitation Specialist, as issued by the National Stroke Association. She is also LSVT BIG and PWR! Certified to treat Parkinson’s disease.

Megan works closely with the faculty of Physical Therapy programs at area universities to provide educational opportunities for students to gain exposure to treating the neurological population. She also regularly hosts clinically affiliating students who demonstrate an interest in treating the neurological population. Megan has provided Safe Steps balance and fall training nationally throughout the healthcare continuum.

The Diagnosis of Essential Treatment and
Appropriate Treatment Options Once the Diagnosis is Made

At this meeting, Dr. Bortan will discuss clinician challenging in the diagnosis of essential tremor (ET): definite, probable and possible ET and appropriate treatment options once the diagnosis is made. In the category of treatment, Dr. Bortan will address how treatment options depend on diagnosis, side effect of medication, underlying patient medical history, failure of symptomatic improvement to medication and decision for invasive therapy.

Dr. Elena Bortan is a Board-Certified Neurologist with sub-specialty training in Movement Disorders. She is a graduate of New England Medical Center and completed a Movement Disorder fellowship at Lahey Clinic. Currently working at Middlesex Hospital, Dr. Bortan’s area of clinical interest includes the treatment of movement disorders such as Essential Tremor, Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, etc.
